Vol.IX Grain Direction in Bookbinding Materials

It is crucially important to establish the grain direction in the materials used in bookbinding, the success or failure of your binding in large part depends on this.

Paper and board are made on a moving conveyor which vibrates from side to side, this action has the effect of lining up the fibres in one direction. It is this that in part determines the grain direction of the paper. The other factor which determines the grain direction is the way the paper is dried.

This fully illustrated little manual explains how to test for the grain direction in the most commonly used bookbinding materials.
